Know Your Library

The Samal Island City College Library and Information Center (SICC-LIC) has established Vision, Mission, Goals, and Objectives (VMGO), which are prominently displayed within the library and on its official webpage. The supervision and administration of the SICC-LIC are clearly defined in the institutional organizational structure, with the library directly under the Vice President for Academic Affairs.

The SICC-LIC is administered by a full-time licensed Head Librarian who holds a Master’s Degree in Library Science (MSLS) and a Ph.D. in Development Administration. The Head Librarian is a member of the Philippine Librarians Association, Inc. (PLAI) and has more than fifteen years of library-related supervisory experience. The Head Librarian is assisted by three (3) qualified, licensed full-time librarians and five (5) library support staff, serving a student population of approximately 3,700.

The SICC-LIC maintains an updated Library Policies and Procedures Manual that governs its operations, services, and resource utilization in both face-to-face and online environments. The library’s collection consists of 4,054 print titles and 1,422 e-book titles, for a total of 5,476 titles, with a grand total of 11,370 volumes.

The SICC-LIC maintains a dedicated library webpage that serves as a gateway for faculty members and students to access the bibliographic listings of library collections and electronic resources. The webpage provides access to online databases, e-books, e-journals, and other web-based library resources. Bibliographic records and collection listings are made accessible through the library’s discovery platform, including the SICC eLibrary webpage, enabling users to locate and access available information resources conveniently.

Organization and Management of Library Collections

The SICC-LIC collection is systematically organized, cataloged, classified, and indexed in accordance with accepted bibliographic standards. Bibliographic records are encoded using the MARC (Machine-Readable Cataloging) format, while the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) is used as the primary system for organizing and classifying library materials.

The library maintains an integrated information environment that brings together its print and electronic collections, including books, journals, e-books, e-journals, and other computerized information resources. These resources are managed through an Integrated Library System (ILS)/Library Management System, utilizing the Follett Destiny® Cloud Solution and Destiny Library Manager, which support the organization, discovery, circulation, and management of library resources.

Library and Information Services

SICC-LIC provides a range of face-to-face and online libraries and information services designed to support teaching, learning, research, and academic activities. These services include:

• Reference and Information Services
• Library Instruction and User Education
• Centralized Circulation Services
• Current Awareness Services
• Virtual Reference Services
• Remote Access to Electronic Resources through the Library webpage
• Assistance in the use of library resources and information tools
• Access to electronic and web-based information resources.

Through these services, the library provides users with flexible and convenient access to information resources and professional assistance, whether they are physically present in the library or accessing resources remotely.

Library Facilities and Learning Environment

The SICC Library and Information Center comprises two library facilities: LIC-1, located on the third floor of the new three-storey building, and LIC-2, located on the second floor of the old library building. Together, these facilities provide an accessible and conducive learning environment for students, faculty members, and other authorized users.

The SICC-LIC functions as a learning and information center equipped with facilities and spaces designed to support individual study, collaborative learning, research, and information access. These include:

·    Dedicated workstations for accessing online resources

·    Centralized reference materials organized according to subject areas and   academic disciplines

·    Individual and two-person study spaces

·    Conference rooms and mini audio-visual (AV) rooms

·    Glass-walled discussion rooms for collaborative learning and group projects

·    Ergonomically designed seating; and

·    Comfortable reading areas.

The library facilities are fully air-conditioned, adequately ventilated, and maintained to provide a comfortable, safe, and conducive environment for reading, study, research, and other academic activities. The combination of physical collections, electronic resources, technology-enabled services, and functional learning spaces enables the SICC-LIC to support the academic, instructional, and research needs of the College community.
