The Library and Its Services

A.  The Library and Information Center is a learning laboratory of the college that provides library and information resources such as books, periodicals, electronic resources, and online databases that can be used for study, research, and for any inquiry.

B.  The Library and Information Center is primarily intended to support the curricula, administrative, and other information needs of the faculty, students, and staff of Samal Island City College (SICC). In support of SICC’s Library vision and mission “to promote reading and lifelong learning to enrich Samal Island’s academic and community life, the center provides users the services essential to identifying and accessing information.

C.  Library Users. The primary community served by SICC Library consists of the current administrators, faculty, staff, and students of SICC who have valid school IDs to ensure proper identification. However, the library also provides reference services to a non-SICC constituent when giving routine reference and information services.

D.  Online Research Zone (ORZ) Service. The library and information center provide facilities for information and communication technology and services for the efficient and convenient retrieval and dissemination of local and remote information resources to its clientele. The facilities include computer desktops with Internet connectivity, printers, and scanner.

E.  The SICC Library and Information Center has a dedicated webpage created to promote and access library resources in an electronic library (e-Lib) named SICC eLibrary (siccelib.blogspot.com). Continuous access to electronic resources, such as online databases, e-books, e-journals, and other open and free e-learning resources to allow faculty members and students to undertake research and other academic activities.

F.  The mini Audio-Visual Services (AV) provides technologies and equipment to support instruction and other instructional activities of the College.

G.  Conference Room can be used by a small group of faculty or students relative to their assignments, research papers, projects or any group works. 

H.  Photocopying, Printing, and Scanning Services. Photocopying/scanning outside is allowed if the library copier is not available.

I.  Organization of Library Resources. The library collections are cataloged descriptively adopting the Resource Description and Access (RDA). The resources are described and classified using the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) Scheme and according to the international standard of the Library of Congress Machine-Readable Catalog (LC-MARC) Standards.

J.  The Information Literacy Program of the SICC Library is categorized into the following:

Library Tour. The library provides scheduled general orientation tours as well as course-related tours when requested by instructors or other College personnel. This is usually conducted after the Library Orientation to students by class and is facilitated by the Librarian. The tour allows a physical or actual presentation of the different services, identifies appropriate library resources, and explains library services and policies of the SICC Library.

 

eLibrary Tour/Digital Library Orientation. The eLibrary tour or the digital library orientation is a recorded video that focuses on the online and free electronic information resources posted in the SICC eLibrary, the library webpage.

 

◦ Library Orientation (individual or group). This service provides a good understanding of the SICC Library's function, policies, facilities, resources, and services. It is being conducted to all undergraduate freshmen and transferees during the start of every semester/class in collaboration with the Office of Students Affairs (OSA).

 

 Library Instruction. The goal of this service is to teach users how to search, evaluate, use the information and how to use the library effectively and independently. The Library Instruction covers the following: Steps in the different search tools, namely: Dewey Decimal Classification System, Library Catalog, Online Databases, and the Internet. Generally, this is given to formal classes embedded in English or other subjects. It may also be conducted in small groups/classes upon request.

 

 Virtual Reference Services. These services are initiated electronically via the internet to serve faculty and students who are outside the physical confines of the library facility. The librarian will respond to clients’ requests during office hours. For requests and other concerns, faculty and students can communicate with the Librarian through the following web tools available on the SICC eLibrary Web page: 

 Ask a Librarian – For any inquiry in the library, the client needs to submit the inquiry/question(s) to the librarian with the required contact information online.

Literature Search Request – To request literature on the specific book page(s) or Chapter(s), journal article(s), the client shall fill out the Literature Search Request Form and submit it to the librarian online.

● SICC Library Facebook Page – The client can read more information about the activities and services of the library through our Facebook page, and can further contact the librarians for any queries through Chat or Private Message/ messenger.

● Chat/Messenger

 K.  Current Awareness Services (CAS). This refers to the services rendered to the faculty members with an aim to inform them on the developments or trends in their field of disciplines or specializations.  The following are the services under CAS:

  Acquisitions List.  List of documents, materials received by the library and are added to the library collection. Librarian and library staff prepare and distribute acquisitions lists which enumerate the books, and other library materials acquired by the SICC Library in certain periods within the school year periodically.

 

 Bulletin Board Display. Regular posting of library announcements about new purchases added to the library collection, new programs and services, and important information being done such as new acquisitions, library statistical reports, current events, monthly celebrations are posted on the library bulletin board.

 

 In-house Index. Contents of journals and other periodicals are indexed in-house to convey useful information needs of the users.

 

 Subject Bibliographies. A list of writings or publications such as books and journal articles on a given subject(s) is prepared.

L.  The LIC uses an In-house Borrowing System in lending and returning borrowed library materials.   

M.  The Circulation service oversees the lending, shelving, maintenance, and retrieval of the library’s resources. This service aims to provide an effective and efficient circulation process of its library resources borrowed by the qualified users from the registration of users, to the issuance of items to be borrowed, returned, and shelved.
