Information Literacy and Program

Information literacy is a service to inform and instruct clientele in the use of library collections and services. The objective is to acquaint clients with general and specialized materials, including general reference sources, monographs, government documents, and other resources required for coursework and research.

The Information Literacy Program of the SICC Library is categorized into the following:

    Library Tour

The library provides scheduled general orientation tours as well as course-related tours when requested by instructors or other College personnel. This is usually conducted after the Library Orientation to students by class and is facilitated by the Librarian. The tour allows a physical or actual presentation of the different services, identifies appropriate library resources, and explains library services and policies of the SICC Library.

    eLibrary Tour/Digital Library Orientation

The eLibrary tour or the digital library orientation is a recorded video that focuses on the online and free electronic information resources posted in the SICC eLibrary, the library webpage.

    Library Orientation (individual or group)

This service provides a good understanding of the SICC Library function, policies, facilities, resources, and services. It is being conducted for all undergraduate freshmen and transferees at the start of every semester/class in collaboration with the Office of Student Affairs (OSA).

For the new faculty members/teachers, the librarian provides a different set of library orientation programs during scheduled faculty meetings.

    Library Instruction

The goal of this service is to teach users how to search, evaluate, use information, and to use the library effectively and independently. The Library Instruction covers the following: Steps in the different search tools, namely: Dewey Decimal Classification System, Library Catalog, Online Databases, and the Internet. Generally, this is given to formal classes embedded in English or other subjects. It may also be conducted in small groups/classes upon request.

Library instruction classes or "bibliographic instruction" are designed to enhance users' ability to make effective use of information sources, regardless of format, and to suggest strategies and methods for organizing research. Class presentations may be held in the library lecture rooms or classrooms. The librarians/staff prepare appropriate instructional materials such as handouts, slide shows, computer presentations, or "pathfinders".

  Virtual Reference Services

These services are initiated electronically via the internet to serve faculty and students who are outside the physical confines of the library facility. The librarian will respond to clients’ requests during office hours.

For requests and other concerns, faculty and students can communicate with the Librarian through the following web tools available on the SICC eLibrary Web page:
